Greek yacht charter | Tips

What is the best period to charter a yacht in the Cyclades islands ?

The best time to sail the Cyclades is mid of April through October. Go any sooner or later and you can easily run into winter storms, limited ferry crossings and restaurants shut for the season.
In April, May and June the Greek islands enjoy long days, all the tourist infrastructure and transportation are operating, the anchorages are less crowded. Sea water may be felt a bit cool at 19°C. Average air temperature at 21°C.
July and August is the peak season.

What is the climate in the Cyclades islands ?

The Cyclades islands are exposed to the north/north east, putting them in the path of the Meltemi wind. The Meltemi tends to start in late June and will come and go until September and mitigates the heat a bit. Usually it is a light sailing breeze of force 4-5 in the early morning hours but as the day progresses it can strengthen to 5-6 by the afternoon and subsides by sunset. It rarely reaches Force 8. Our skippers will anticipate this by monitoring the build up of pressure in the West and accordingly adapt their route. Top sailing vacation in Greece rely greately upon a well mastered itinerary.

JULY and AUGUST
Greece like in the post cards! Cloudless skies and constant northerly winds that cool the air. Average of calm days are 3 per month and they are hot. Otherwise average air temperatures around 25°C and the sea at 20°C. It is the most popular season but also the most crowded! Sailing the islands at this period surely is the best way to visit them off the beaten track.

SEPTEMBER - OCTOBER
In the fall, crowds are gone home but good dry weather is still around! It usually blows from various directions, at a force of 3-4 Beaufort. All in all its a delightful season to visit the islands. To be frank, the only down side are the shorter days. The second half of October, the weather changes and light rain starts to fall. Otherwise the average sunshine are at 9 hours per day, average sea water temperature at 22°C and air temperature at 20°C.

Your Greek yacht charter and the euro crisis

Austerity measures will be implemented across Europe during 2012. These will affect mainly the daily lives of locals. Disturbances, if any, are expected to take place in big cities. Outside city centers, travel to tourist destinations will hardly be affected. Although many riots were reported in Greece, these actually took place in one square mile downtown Athens. Tourism in the Greek islands remained untouched. The yacht charter industry is weathering the storm.
