What to expect from sailing in the Cyclades islands?
Delineated by the Athens (Argosaronic) Gulf to the West and the Dodekanese islands to the East, the Cyclades islands are a true sailors heaven. An important pressure gradient builds up between the high pressure in the western Mediterranean and the Asian low pressure, generating the summer etesian northely wind (aka meltemi) which funnels between the Greek and Turkish mainlands. Serious gales do occur only in winter, when low pressures sweep the area.
A blessing for some, a bogeyman for others, some facts about the Meltemi wind:
-it rarely reaches gale force (occurance less than a day per month).
-it warrants a constant cool and dry air so that we do not experience heat waves like else where in the region.
-it often blows moderately, abating in the evening. Average occurance of calms are 3 days in a month.
-at most, a strong breeze may last up to 3 or 4 days. A competent skipper will anticipate this by monitoring the build up of pressure in the West and accordingly adapt his route.
Too often, we see ambitious itineraries being drawn by people oblivious of the peculiar nature of the winds in our area where funnel effects and turbulences mix up with sea breezes. The Cyclades are arrayed in a circle (Κυκλάδες in Greek), with the winds blowing from NE in the West and the NW in the East. Knowing this one may accomplish a circular cruise island hopping without having to tack!
Pleasurable memories of your sailing vacation in Greece rely greately upon a well mastered itinerary.
We are all experienced sailors, why should we need a skipper ?
A captain can only be usefull if he knows the area like the back of his hand and can make the most of the prevailing weather conditions to help you draw a realistic itinerary. Your skipper is rather an inconspicuous member of your team, not a graft. He will also be your guide on the islands and perhaps most importantly, be in charge of cumbersome boat maintenance. If you are experienced, you know that Murphy’s Law applies also to the best maintained yachts and you probably do not want to spoil your sailing cruise in the Greek islands, trying to source parts or figuring out solutions to technical riddles! Your skipper is a trump card for successfull sailing vacation in Greece.
Finally, thanks to your captain’s intimate knowledge of your charter yacht, you shall not squander your precious holiday sailing time in tedious check-ins and check-outs, you may instead sail away immediately upon your arrival on the yacht as well as use the boat up to the last minute of your charter.
How do I get to Paros ?
Either by ferry or by air.
BY FERRY
Ferries to the Greek islands leave from Piraeus port (1 hour from Athens airport by taxi and 1 hour and a half by direct shuttle) and from Rafina port (45 minutes hour from Athens airport by taxi). Ferry trip lenght: between 3 and 4 hours depending on the boat.
If you take the 7 am Blue Star ferry or Highspeed ferry from Piraeus port, you will be in Paros perfectly in time to be on board our yachts at 12 noon. You will sail as soon as you are ready !
An other option is to take a ferry from Mykonos (1 hour away from Paros) or Santorini (2 and a half hours away from Paros).
BY AIR
Take a connecting flight at Athens airport. 30 minutes flight with Olympic Air.
